Greetings RT, I served as a Peace Corps volunteer in a '3rd world' country 50 yrs ago, and stayed. For all the arrogant 1st world's thoughts about 'us', many found it satisfying to live in small towns where communities are still friendly and work together. Visitors are often astonished that locals often greet anyone on the sidewalks or streets - regardless if they are known acquaintances or not. This what we have here is true civilisation.
Agree about human cashiers...I hate "self checkout"! Sorry, robots, but I'm a bit old school at age 71...
