There are many verses in Proverbs and beyond that describe the blessings of diligence and the curses of laziness--God's general principles of work that are profitable for believers and nonbelievers alike. By being diligent and honest, one "helps" himself toward material profit. However, it is also true that when it comes to God's help in matters of the heart, he draws near to those of a humble and contrite heart, which is to say, those who know and admit they are helpless but turn to him for forgiveness, restoration and repair.
