Great article! We're you at the field in Conyers? We saw that field one year when our son was in Dixie Youth All Stars, and then again during a travel ball tournament. I think the Buddy Ball tournaments are wonderful.

I also enjoyed "walking" with you on the travel ball memories. Our son "ran out of gas" when he was 14...even when he was encouraged by our future son-in-law, who himself was a baseball star, to stick with it as he would no doubt make the HS varsity team as a freshman the following year. Alas, our son decided to pursue other interests...and our future son-in-law quit ball his senior year....so youth baseball died in our family. Now, thirteen years later, our son wonders what would have happened had he stuck with it. Our son-in-law is glad he quit, despite his dad's disappointment...but we enjoy going to see the Braves and the Rays whenever we can.

If you want to be entertained, go to a college game, or the minor league games such as the Savannah Bananas or Macon Bacon...they're great fun and I look forward to another season.

No, this event was in Buckhead, but you're right, this kind of baseball game is so enjoyable to watch. One of my other sons ran out of gas earlier, too, and another loved it right through high school, but added football. My youngest boy is still in the baseball years.

Yeah, we went the travel baseball route for two boys with one reaching the NCAA level as a pitcher. He had a good experience as a closer and enjoyed the team stuff more than baseball. He is now finishing his degree after a sidebar in the US Navy. All good. Your Buddy Ball experience was great. Puts the whole amateur baseball thing into perspective. It really is the best of the game put into action. Thanks for the story and best to you and yours.

That sounds like a great outcome. I also observe that serious athletes (at least in soccer) are often also good students, which is impressive considered the big time crunch that multiple practices creates. I would say all of my boys were more excited about the team brotherhood than the game itself. My soccer player is much, much. more excited about the game, and it makes a difference.

Participant trophies were undoubtedly provided to all, long before DEI mandated them.

One of my children earned sixth and seventh place "ribbons" at a couple swim meets. There were only seven lanes.
